Fishing serves as a unifying activity for families, providing children with an opportunity to connect with the beauty of nature and engage in outdoor pursuits. The tradition of the Fishing Derby at McKinley Park dates back to 1947, just a few years after the conclusion of World War II. When Mayor Richard J. Daley assumed office as the Mayor of Chicago, he consistently organized an annual fishing derby at McKinley Park, which became a beloved family tradition. Even today, adults fondly recall the joy they experienced as children during these cherished Fishing Derbies at McKinley Park.
In September of 1975, the then State Senator Richard M. Day organized an 11th Ward Fishing Derby held at McKinley Park. In the late 1980s, the then 12th Ward Alderman Mark Fary also hosted a fishing derby at McKinley Park. However, fishing derbies at McKinley experienced a long hiatus that spanned decades. Fortunately, Steve Demitro revived the McKinley Fishing Derby a few years ago, and it has since become a tremendous success for the local community. Currently, Steve is diligently preparing for the upcoming 4th annual fishing derby. Stay tuned for more information!
During his four fishing tournaments, Steve Demitro introduced more than 7,500 fish into the lagoon, including Largemouth Bass, Catfish, and Bluegill.
The Steve Demitro Fishing Derby, a community event for the family at McKinley Park has earned the reputation as Chicago’s Best Fishing Derby.
