“Heroic 1st Flag-Raising at Iwo Jima Included Brave Marine From Bridgeport”

On February 23, 1945, U.S. Marines raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi, the highest point on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. The flag-raising was a significant moment in the war and became a powerful symbol of American patriotism and military valor. The event was captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, whose iconic photograph of the flag-raising became one of the most famous images of the war. (Photo below.)

Two Flags Were Raised At Iwo Jima On February 23, 1945

The first flag-raising at Iwo Jima was not the original plan for the day. A small group of Marines, including Private First Class James R. Michels from Bridgeport had been assigned to climb to the top of Mount Suribachi to capture the strategic position. After a fierce battle, the Marines reached the summit and planted a small American flag. PFC James Michels is the Marine holding the M1 Carbine rifle providing cover while the 1st fag was being raised. However, the Marines quickly realized that the flag was too small to be easily seen from the base of the mountain, so a second, larger flag was quickly secured and raised. It was this second flag-raising that was captured by Rosenthal’s photograph and became an enduring symbol of American heroism and sacrifice.
