IWO JIMA, Feb. 23, 1945 — In a defining moment of the Battle of Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, marking a powerful symbol of American resolve during one of the Pacific War's most brutal campaigns.
What many Chicagoans may not know is that a young man from Bridgeport was among the Marines present at that historic moment — part of the patrol that made the first flag-raising on Suribachi, before the more famous second raising that was immortalized in Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph.

The story of this Bridgeport Marine is a reminder that the neighborhoods of Chicago's South Side have long produced men and women of extraordinary courage and service. From the streets of Bridgeport to the volcanic sands of Iwo Jima, this Marine carried the spirit of his community into one of history's most consequential battles.
The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted 36 days and resulted in nearly 7,000 American deaths and over 19,000 wounded. The Marines who fought there are remembered as some of the bravest in American military history.
