Wow! Nation’s Best Kids’ Fishing Derby Rocks Chicago’s McKinley Park!

The center of Chicago, McKinley Park, was alive with energy on Saturday as the Steve Demitro Fishing Derby – now earning a solid reputation as the Nation’s Best Kids’ Fishing Derby – made a huge splash! Families from all corners of Chicago gathered for a morning filled with fishing fun under perfect skies. Kids, ages 7 to 16, lined the water’s edge, eager to hook one of the 5,000 fish stocked just for the event. Laughter, cheers, and fishing tunes filled the air, making for an unforgettable atmosphere. Whether they were seasoned anglers or casting a line for the first time, every participant had their eyes on the water – and the competition was fierce! Generous sponsors like Huck Finn delivered fresh donuts, and Mariano’s provided water, juices, and snacks to keep the excitement going.

But the fishing wasn’t the only attraction! The Chicago Mounted Police trotted through the derby. And when it came to prizes, the derby delivered in a big way! Bridgeport Tackle donated 10 brand-new fishing poles, while Bass Pro Shop threw in three $50 gift cards. There were even two brand-new bikes donated by Target and Hamburg Athletic Association, The White Sox gave lower box seats for next season, making the crowd roar with excitement. As the morning flew by, donuts fueled the fun, and by lunchtime, McDonald’s swooped in with cheeseburgers, keeping everyone satisfied after a morning of reeling in the big catches.

As the final fish were caught and the last prizes handed out, McKinley Park was filled with smiles and stories of the day’s fishing triumphs. The Steve Demitro Fishing Derby wasn’t just about catching fish; it was a true celebration of community, outdoor adventure, and a whole lot of fun. Whether the kids hauled in a prize-winning fish or just a tiny sunfish, every child left with cherished memories and a fish tale or two to share back home!
